4 injured in Munshiganj post-poll violence

At least four people, including a defeated chairman candidate, were injured as rival group supporters attacked them in connection with the by-election of Hossaindi union parishad at Gazaria upazila in Munshiganj on Sunday.

The by-election for the union parishad was held on November 2.

The injured were Mahbub Mia, 34, defeated chairman candidate, his followers Riyad, 25, Emon, 18 and Shuvo, 26.

Mahbub said that chairman Monirul Haque Mithu’s supporters attacked them, beat him and vandalised his car, while he and his supporters were passing the area.

The injured were sent to the Gazaria Upazila Health Complex.

The emergency department doctor of the health complex Arshad Kabir said that of the injured, two patients were receiving treatment at the health facility and two others were referred to Dhaka hospitals for better treatment.

Monirul Haque Mithu denied the allegations and claimed that Mahbub Mia’s supporters attacked him and his supporters.

He also said, ‘An agitated mob of the locality blocked them because of the previous resentment, but no beating or vandalism incident took place there.’ Officer-in-charge of the Gazaria police station Mollah Soheb Ali said that he got a report about the incident, but no one lodged complaints over it.
