BCL activists block Dhaka-Chattogram highway

Bangladesh Chattra League of Gazaira upazila unit in Munshiganj district on Saturday blocked Dhaka-Chattogram highway under the upazila demanding the full committee.

The post seekers of the BCL, ruling Awami League’s student body, disrupted the vehicular movement in front of Bismillah restaurant, according to witnesses.

The local police, however, brought the situation under control soon and the vehicular movement returned to normalcy after 15 minutes.

The aggrieved BCL leaders, meanwhile, gave a 48-hours ultimatum to meet their demand, otherwise they warned to go for tougher movement.

The agitated leaders brought out a procession from Bhaberchar bus stand and blocked the highway for 15 minutes. Their procession ended with holding a short rally in the bus stand.

BCL Gazaira upazila unit former member Parvez Ahmed Sumon said that the post seekers staged the movement against the present office bearer as the full committee of the unit was yet to be formed.

‘We hold procession as first phase of the movement. If they do not take initiative to form the full committee soon, we will carry out tougher programmes,’ pazrvez said.

Another BCL activist Tafsirul Quran Shanto said that current upazila unit was running through only six members pocket committee and four of them were dysfunctional.

The protesting leaders and activists claimed that upazila BCL unit president Habibur Rahman Habib and general secretary Yunus Prodhan were scheduled to form the full committee within 60 days of the announcement of the faction. But two years had passed, they did not keep their words.

Contacted, the upazila unit president Habibur Rahman Habib and general secretary Yunus Prodhan said that they had sent all papers to form a full committee to the district unit leaders and it would be approved soon.

Asked about the full committee proposal, BCL Munshiganj district unit president Faisal Mridha denied and said that they did not receive such proposal from upazila unit.
