4 held with 57 barrels of stolen oil in Munshiganj

Police have detained four members of an inter-district robbery gang along with 57 barrels of oil, a truck, a double cabin vehicle and a pickup van at Sreenagar upazila in Munshiganj district.

The information was disclosed by Additional Superintendent of Police of Sreenagar Circle, Anisur Rahman, during a press briefing at Sreenagar Police Station around noon on Tuesday.

The detained individuals are Alam, 32, from Sonargaon upazila in Narayanganj; Alomgir Hossain, 38, from Jugir Hawla area of Rangabali upazila in Patuakhali; Helaluzzaman, from Pashchimkhond area of Moksudpur upazila in Golapganj; and Zobayer Ahmed Jibon, 27, from Hasnabad area of South Keraniganj.

According to the press briefing, on April 29, a truck carrying 75 plastic drums of palm oil departed from Kanchpur Multi International Oil Mill in Narayanganj, bound for Jhenaidah. Around 9 PM, while passing near Bejgaon passenger shed on the Dhaka-Mawa Expressway, six members of a organized robbery gang intercepted the truck using a black double cabin pickup. Pretending to be detectives (DB police), they stopped the vehicle, claimed it was transporting drugs and forced the driver and helper into their own vehicle. The robbers then took the truck to Hasnabad in Dhaka and unloaded the oil.

The mastermind behind the incident was identified as Md. Helaluzzaman, a businessman from Mir Hajirbagh in Dhaka, who purchased the stolen oil.

Following an operation by local police and DB (Detective Branch), authorities recovered 35 filled oil drums and 22 empty ones from a shop named M/S Jamal Enterprise and Variety Store in Mir Hajirbagh.

Present at the press briefing were Srenagar Police Station officer-in-charge Shakil Ahmed, inspector (Investigation) Aminul Islam, DB sub-inspectors Abul Kalam Azad and Hamim Mohammad Tarek, among others.
