Procession was held in Munshiganj
Activists of banned organisation Chhatra League and Jubo League brought out a procession in Sirajdikhan upazila of Munshiganj this morning in front of policemen, who reportedly took no action.
Following the incident, Sub-Inspector Md Kamruzzaman — who was present at the scene — has been suspended and constables Md Shafik and Md Badsha have been withdrawn and attached to the district police lines, Sirajdikhan Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge Abu Bakar Siddique confirmed The Daily Star.
The procession was held around 9:00am at Imamganj Bazar area of Basail union, in support of the shutdown programme announced by the Awami League following the pronouncement of the death sentence of Sheikh Hasina.
A video of the march, showing around 25-30 activists chanting slogans while carrying banners labelled “Sirajdikhan Upazila Awami Jubo League” and “Munshiganj District Chhatra League”, went viral on social media, triggering widespread discussion and criticism.
Sirajdikhan OC Abu Bakar said action taken against the officers on allegations that they “could have detained the demonstrators on the spot but failed to do so”.
Police later detained three participants of the procession.
They are Mokbul Hossain Dewan, 54, president of Malkhanagar union Jubo League, Md Sohel Sheikh, 35, and Montu Bhuiya, 30.
Legal action is underway against the detainees, he added.
