Facebook Romance Leads Chinese Man to Marry Bangladeshi Woman

A young man named Li Yang travelled from China to Bangladesh out of love, changed his name to Abdullah, and married a young woman from Kattadia village in Tongibari, Munshiganj. He is now living with her family, sharing meals, and mingling with locals, creating significant buzz in the area.

It is known that one and a half years ago, Munshiganj’s Manjuri Akter Jesika became acquainted with Chinese youth Li Yong through Facebook. Their acquaintance soon turned into a romantic relationship. For the past six months, Li had been expressing his desire to come to Bangladesh to marry Jesika. However, posts in various media and social platforms about foreign nationals deceiving women made Jesika hesitant. Later, Li arranged a conversation between his parents and Jesika’s mother, after which Jesika’s family softened their stance, and Li arrived in Bangladesh on 14 November.

Jesika said that on the morning of 14 November, when Li Yong landed at Shahjalal International Airport around 7 am, they went straight to a kazi office in Mir Kadim of Sadar Upazila and got married. Li Yang’s name was changed to Abdullah during the process. She added that they later authenticated the marriage documents at the Chinese Embassy. Afterwards, they began living together at Jesika’s home.

During a visit to the area, it was observed that many people were gathering at Jesika’s house. Whenever Abdullah stepped outside, locals surrounded him out of curiosity.

Jesika said she had completed SSC from a local school. She lives with her mother and younger brother, as her father passed away three years ago. Her two sisters are already married.

Jesika recalled that she met Li Yong one and a half years ago through Facebook and began communicating via a language transfer app. Their conversations eventually turned into love. She repeatedly discouraged him from coming to Bangladesh after seeing YouTube and Facebook videos of foreign nationals deceiving women. But Li insisted that not everyone was bad and that he sincerely loved her. Despite her objections for six months, he remained determined and finally arrived. After landing on 14 November, they married at a local kazi office and then returned home.

She added that Abdullah came on a one-month visa, while her own visa application is being processed. If approved, she plans to move to China with him. Abdullah has assured her that if she feels homesick in China, he will bring her back to Bangladesh.

Jesika’s family members said Abdullah eats the same food they do and especially enjoys fish.

One of Jesika’s aunts, requesting anonymity, said that the girl is very good and has done nothing wrong. She added that the marriage was conducted according to religious rules, making the relationship pure.

Local resident Bipu Madbor said Jesika is his niece. Her father, Hossain Sheikh, died three years ago. As she developed a romantic relationship with the Chinese youth, he came to Bangladesh out of love, and both families agreed to the marriage. He added that the groom is polite and well-behaved.

Police intelligence sources reported that the youth’s name is Mr Li Yang, son of Mr Li Guang, residents of Nanjing Country in Ranzhong City, China. One and a half years ago, he met Jesika on Facebook. Li Yang came to Bangladesh on 14 November, married Jesika according to Islamic law, and has been staying at his in-laws’ house in Kattadia.

Tongibari Police Station’s officer-in-charge (OC) Md Saiful Alam stated that after receiving information, police were first sent to the house on Friday night, followed by a second visit by intelligence officers for further inquiry.
