A scrap trader was hacked to death by unidentified assailants at his residence in Louhajang upazila of Munshiganj early today.

The deceased was identified as Sohel Munshi, 39, of Kalurgaon village in the upazila, said Md Anisur Rahman, additional superintendent of police (Sreenagar Circle).

Quoting family members, the police official said Sohel went to bed after having dinner last night. His wife was sleeping in an adjacent room with their child and mother-in-law.

Late at night, family members noticed a fire in the courtyard and rushed outside. They found Sohel in a pool of blood in the yard, with his motorcycle engulfed in flames.

The family alleged that unidentified assailants had attacked him with sharp weapons before setting the motorcycle on fire and fleeing the scene.

Police recovered the body and sent it to Munshiganj General Hospital morgue for an autopsy.

According to police, Sohel was involved in the scrap business and had a drug-related case filed against him in 2022.
