Humayun Azad remembered

Speakers in a discussion meeting at Dhaka University on Tuesday demanded trial of the attackers of Humayun Azad, a prominent writer and a professor of Bangla department.

They also demanded trial of war criminals as they were behind the attack.

Humayun Azad Sangsad and Humayun Azad Foundation jointly organised the discussion meeting, observing his 62nd anniversary of birth at the Teachers Students Centre auditorium of Dhaka University.

The education minister, Nurul Islam Nahid, attended the programme as chief guest. The minister said this is the responsibility of the government to take initiatives for trial and punishment of the killer of Humayun Azad and the government will act on this soon.

He also said Humayun Azad tried to work for national interest as he wanted to establish an equal, non-communal Bangladesh. The attackers of Humaun Azad also belonged to those forces who were involved in war crimes in 1971.

He said the issue had been discussed in the parliament and people can expect that war criminals will face the trial during the Awami League regime.

The Dhaka University vice-chancellor, AAMS Arefin Siddique, also demanded the trial of fundamentalists involved in the attack on Humayun Azad and said, ‘We only can show respect to him by changing the society positively.’

He urged the new generation to build a non-communal and discrimination-free Bangladesh.

Awami League leader Nooh-ul-Alam Lenin said Humayun Azad was politically a neutral and a secular person and had a strong voice against all types of discrimination and unethical activities by the governments and their allies.

Professor Muntasir Mamun of history department, Professor Rafiqullah Khan of Bangla department and Humayun Azad’s widow Latifa Kohinoor Azad were also present in the programme.
