Khoka likely choice for convener of city BNP

Dhaka City Mayor Sadeque Hossain Khoka is likely to be made convener of Dhaka City unit of BNP, according to insiders.

Sources said the Dhaka City convening committee along with two other committees, which are yet to be formed, might be finalised at the BNP Standing Committee meeting scheduled to be held tomorrow (Saturday).

Begum Zia is expected to announce the Dhaka city committee, Dhaka district committee and also Manikganj district committee prior to her departure to perform Umrah.

According to insiders, Khoka, the former president of Dhaka city unit of BNP is favoured for the post by most of the thana and ward level leaders of the party.

An influential quarter in the party is lobbying with party Chairperson Begum Khaleda to make former minister Mirza Abbas city convener, but she did not pay heed to it, a city leader said.

He said party secretary general Khondoker Delwar Hossain at a meeting of the standing committee on Monday last placed a proposal to the Chairperson suggesting the name of Mirza Abbas as city convenor and Goyeshwar Chandra Roy as Dhaka district convenor. Begum Zia reportedly was angry with him (Delwar) for placing the proposal which was not on the agenda. Party sources said most of the standing committee members are in favour of Khoka for the post. According to a standing committee member, there is no alternative to Khoka to adorn the coveted post. “Khoka is going to be the convener of the city unit of BNP, if no dramatic event takes place,” he said.

Earlier, the Dhaka City unit of BNP was dissolved after the arrest of the BNP Chairperson during the caretaker government in 2007.
