Tk 438cr RMG industrial park outside Dhaka in the offing

The Industries Ministry is planning to set up a garments industrial park outside Dhaka to provide one stop services to Readymade Garment (RMG) entrepreneurs, officials said.

A project titled ‘Garments Industrial Park’ has drawn up to set up the planned park on 300 acres of land at Bausia under Gojaria upazila of Munshiganj district. The project at an estimated cost of Taka 438cr is the first government initiative to establish the RMG hub aimed at developing and modernizing the potential industry.

Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industries Corporation (BSCIC), run under the ministry, is scheduled to begin implementation of the project next year.

“This will be a model RMG industrial park, which will help attract foreign buyers,” said Khandaker Nuruzzaman, Joint Chief (planning) of the ministry.

He said the main objective of the project is to shift the existing garment industrial units from the capital city, Gazipur and Narayanganj to promote the garment sector.

The planned park will have numerous infrastructure facilities including attractive industrial plots, internal roads, drainage facilities, uninterrupted supply of utilities, central effluent treatment plant (CETP), waste dumping yard and fire fighting equipment.

Welcoming the decision, commerce secretary M Ghulam Hussain earlier termed the initiative as epoch-making and said it would give a fillip to the multi-billion dollar industry.

According to the project concept paper, the RMG industry has expanded substantially but industrial plots were set up in an unplanned manner in the capital and its fringes, which resulted in environmental pollution and accidents in different forms at industrial units.

Given the situation, it said, necessity of shifting the unplanned and haphazard garment factories to convenient places was felt both at public and private level.

The RMG industry is considered as the country’s largest foreign currency earner, contributing nearly 80 per cent of all export earnings.

Over 2.5 million workers are now employed in this most labour-intensive sector.
