Police today arrested seven villagers for their alleged involvement in a fierce clash between two groups of Awami League on Wednesday night that left at least 10 people injured at Chardumuria in sadar upazila.
Those arrested are Minhazuddin, Shaheen Mia, Feroj Khan, Russel, Sabuj Mia, Vuttu Dalal and Sanaullah of the same village.
Prosecuted in the court in an explosive case, they were sent to jail.
Police said at least 10 people were injured in a fierce clash between two rival groups of ruling Awami League, one led by district vice-president Shah Alam Mallik and the other by sadar upazila vice-president Mustafa Molla.
The clash occurred as sequel of differences in selection of candidates for the ensuing union parishad election. Both sides used firearms and explosives during the clash that continued till about midnight.
Meanwhile, villagers alleged that innocent people not involved in the clash were arrested and thrown into jail.
“Police arrested the villagers who were not involved in the clash to hide the real troublemakers of the ruling party,” said Shah Alam.
