Four missing as trawler sinks in river Ichhamoti

At least four people including a journalist were missing and 10 others injured after a trawler carrying them sank in the river Ichhamoti.

Around 60 passengers were on board the vessel when it sank 1.5 kilometres from the Sadar Upazila on its way to the Lalon festival at Tekerhat in Sirajdikhan Upazila in Munshiganj around 9.30pm on Friday.

Rescuers already located the sunken trawler on Friday night but failed to retrieve it until 9.30am on Saturday, the police said.

Injured people were sent to different hospitals in Munshiganj and Dhaka.

Sirajdikhan police chief Mahbub Alam quoting survivors said the vessel sank when it collided with a sand-laden trawler.

Most of the passengers managed to swim ashore. But four people including staff reporter of Bangladesh Shomoy Mahiuddin Chhoton, 26, were still missing, said Alam.

He said that the accident occurred as none of the vessels had lights. The sand-laden trawler was seized, but none was so far arrested, said the police officer.

Munshiganj police assistant superintendent (ASP) Kamrul Islam told bdnews24.com that fire service divers had located the sunken trawler in the early hours of Saturday. But there were no bodies in the vessel.

Rescuers started their search for the missing passengers from Saturday morning, Islam added.
