The government will establish a ‘Garment Palli’ having on an area of about 400 acres of land at Bausia in Munshiganj, official sources said.
A decision was taken in this regard by the commerce ministry Thursday to finalise the project within the next six months for relocating export-oriented garment factories.
Once the project is completed it will immensely help modernise garment industries as well as reduce nagging traffic jam in the city.
The decision came at the 16th meeting of ‘Social Compliance Forum for Ready Made Garments (RMG)’ held Thursday at the conference room of the commerce ministry. Commerce Minister Muhammad Faruk Khan presided over the meeting.
The export-oriented garment sector in Bangladesh witnesses a great chance to boost its trade following an end to global meltdown that has prompted the European Union countries to give new facilities on the Generalised System of Preference(GSP) and simplification of Rules of Origin by Japan, a highly placed source of the commerce ministry told the FE.
Thursday’s meeting discussed the ‘tremendous prospect’ to increase Bangladesh garment exports. It also underscored the need to maintain quality of the country’s export-oriented garments factories at par international standard.
Strengthening training courses for employees of the sector, forming ‘Participation Committee’ at all the garment factories within the next three months, upgrading cent percent compliance system in the factories and creating more awareness among the workers regarding fire extinguishing systems also came up for discussion.
Appointment of workers and their identity cards, ensure minimum wages and overtime, weekly holiday and facilities of maternal leave were also discussed.
BGMEA President Abdus Salam Murshedy said the implementation of minimum wage started since November 01 last.
“So far 85 per cent of the minimum wage has been implemented and we hope the rest will be done within the next couple of days,” he told The FE.
ATM Mortuza Reza Chowdhury, Additional Secretary, Monoz Kumar Roy, Joint Secretary (Export) of the commerce ministry, Jalal Ahmed, Vice- Chairman and Md Amir Hossain, Director General (DG) of Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) and second vice president of BKMEA Md Hatem, among others, were present in the meeting.
