Locals protest construction of airport in Munshiganj

People of Munshiganj blocked the Dhaka-Mawa Highway and formed a human chain on Monday in protest against the construction of proposed Bangabandhu International Airport in the district.

Transport movement on the Dhaka-Mawa Highway remained suspended since 10:30am, reports our Munshiganj correspondent.

About 30,000 people of different occupations built the 8-kilometre long human chain from Shologhar to Nimtoli in Sreenagar upazila.

The protestors were holding placards and festoons demanding shifting of the airport from the district, our Munshiganj correspondent reports.

Local people claimed that lakhs of people become unemployed if the airport would be constructed here.

They will continue their programme until any announcement comes in their favour, the protestors said.

Sreenagar police Chief Md Mahabubul Alam said police were trying to bring the situation under control.

Dhaka and Munshiganj district administration has started the process of acquiring 25,000 acres of land in Sreenagar upazila of Munshiganj, in Nababganj and Dohar upazilas of Dhaka to build the Bangabandhu International Airport.

Around 10,895 acres of the wetland is in Sreenagar upazila of Munshiganj, 7,017 acres in Nababganj and 7,188 acres in Dohar upazilas of Dhaka.
