State Minister for Housing and Public Works Advocate Abdul Mannan Khan said Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib International Airport would be constructed by acquiring khas land and vested property in Arial Beel area under Srinagar and Tongibari upazilas in Munshiganj.
“Public housing or habitation will not be acquired for setting up the airport. The land price will be offered as per international standard, which is six or seven times higher than the prevailing rate,” he said.
The state minister was addressing a dialogue on “The establishment of Bangabandhu International Airport and Our Visions” organised by Munshiganj Students’ Welfare Trust at Dhaka Reporters’ Unity (DRU) in the capital on Tuesday.
“A city will be constructed alongside the airport and named after Bangabandhu while ICT and industrial park will also be established. The valuation of land in the area will rise at geometric progression and mainstream development activities will be carried out there simultaneously,” said the state minister.
Unemployed people of the area will get employment opportunity while communication network will be developed there to keep pace with the global community and attract foreign investments, he said.
An international airport should be relocated outside the capital to ease traffic jam as well as to ensure integrated city planning, said Shagufta Yasmin Emily, MP of Srinagar-Tongibari constituency.
People are now aware of the development plan and fifty thousand people have already formed a human chain alongside the road from Srinagar to Dhaka, demanding setting up the international airport, she added.
