A sweetmeat shop owner in the city has been jailed for cheating in weight and not ensuring hygienic environment in his shop.
A mobile court sentenced Anik Ghosh, owner of ‘Bikrampur Mistanna Bhandar’ at Kalabagan, to two months’ imprisonment during an anti-adulteration drive on Sunday.
The court, led by Dhaka district magistrate Muhammad Al-Amin, also fined shop manager Bashudev Ghosh Tk 100,000 for the wrongdoings. He has to suffer two months’ imprisonment in case of failure to pay the fine.
“The sweetmeat shop owner cheats people in weight while selling curds and gains illegal profit of Tk 1.86 million a year,” assistant director of Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution (BSTI) Shahinur Islam, a member of the mobile court, said.
He calculated the illegal earnings based on the daily average sales at the shop.
“Since it’s a serious crime, we didn’t fine the wrongdoer, but jailed him,” the magistrate said,
