Muhith opens biggest shipyard in Munshiganj tomorrow

Khan Brothers Shipbuilding Limited is going to open the country’s largest shipyard in Munshiganj tomorrow, expecting to draw 10 per cent of total market share of the global ship-building industry by next 10 years.

Finance Minister AMA Muhith is expected to formally inaugurate the shipyard built at a cost of Tk 1.50 billion on a land of 300 bighas. The shipyard is located at Hossendi union of Gazaria upazila in Munshiganj district.

M Enamul Kabir Khan, Chairman of Khan Brothers Shipbuilding Limited, disclosed this at a press conference held at Dhaka Reporters Unity conference room in the city on Thursday.

Directors of the company Dr Abdur Rahim and AAF Mukim also addressed the press.

The inaugural function is also expected to be attended by Industries Minister Dilip Barua, German Ambassador to Bangladesh Holger Michael, Danish Ambassador in Dhaka Svend Olling and President of Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) AK Azad.

“We could bag $10 billion in next ten years by having 10 percent of global share of shipping industry worth $400 billion,” Khan Brothers’ chairman expected.

Khan said the company has already received orders to build two ferries, 17 oil tankers and tourist vessels worth about Tk 2.50 billion. Of them, one tourist vessel is ready for handing over to a UK-Bangladesh joint venture.

“We are going to sign an agreement with a German leading company for which we will make sea-going vessels worth 100 million euro,” he added.

Enamul Kabir Khan said the company has also planned to expand its investment to make large-size sea-going vessels up to 15,000 DWT of capacity.

He informed that the company entered the ship building business in 2007 and by this time, have received big orders from many countries.
