A group of cattle lifters killed an assistant sub-inspector (ASI) of police and injured two constables in the city’s Agargaon area early Thursday.
The deceased was identified as ASI Belayet of Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station.
The injured constables, Yunus and Mizan, were admitted to a city hospital.
Tipped off, a team of Mirpur police chased a group of cattle lifters when they were coming to the city from Mawa of Munshiganj in a bus with lifted cows, said Mizanur Rahman, a sub-inspector of the police station.
At one stage, the thugs tried to flee the scene through Agargaon crossing.
Being informed by Mirpur police, a patrol team of Agargon police put barricade on the road with a CNG-run auto-rickshaw and signaled the recklessly-driven bus to stop.
But the bus driver violated the signal and hit the auto-rickshaw and policemen standing beside it, leaving the three cops injured.
Later, the criminals fled the scene when the bus driver stopped the bus near IDB Bhaban.
Police arrested the bus driver and seized the bus with five lifted cows. Of the injured, ASI Belayet was taken to a local clinic where he succumbed to his injuries.
