A gang of around two hundred armed robbers looted 788 tolas of gold and silver jewellery and over Tk 5 lakh in cash, ransacking six shops in Sreenagar upazila of Munshiganj early Saturday.
Of the jewellery, 238 tolas are of gold while 550 tolas are of silver, reports our Munshiganj correspondent.
Mizanur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Sreenagar Police Station, quoting witnesses said at least two hundred burglars made away with the ornaments and money.
The robbers reached Baghra bazaar of the upazila around 12:00am by three trawlers as the bazaar stands on the bank of Padma River, the OC said.
Being divided into several groups, they took control over the entire bazaar within 30 minutes at their gunpoint and entered four jewellery shops owned by Narendra Karmakar, Madak Pal, Bimal Pal and Madan Das.
They also beat up the staff of the shops as they refused to surrender them the keys of the lockers.
The criminal also looted Tk 1,70,000 from a clothing shop and Tk 30,000 from a tea stall during their two-hour burglary.
None was arrested in this connection.
