UP member killed in Munshiganj clash

A Union Parishad (UP) member who was injured in a clash between two groups of people at Goalimandra Bedepalli village in Louhajang upazila on Sunday afternoon has died.

Shahid Sardar, 50, a member of Haldia Union and a resident of the village, succumbed to his injuries at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) on Sunday night.

Police said an altercation took place between the supporters of Shahid Sardar and some residents of Bedepalli over drug peddling in the area around 2 pm on Sunday.

The clash ensued when the villagers attacked the supporters of Shahid Sardar with sharp weapons.

A chase and counter chase took place during the melee that left 16 people, including Shahid, injured.

A total of 18 houses were also vandalised during the clash.

On information, police rushed in and fired 15 rounds of rubber bullets to bring the situation under control.

Shahid member was first taken to Louhajang health complex and later shifted to the DMCH where he succumbed to his injuries around 7 pm.

The other injured were treated at the local health complex and Mitford Hospital in Dhaka.
