PBL land forcefully occupied for Meghna Bridge repair purpose

The sub-contractor repairing the Meghna Bridge, with the support of officials, has forcefully occupied the land of the Project Builders Limited (PBL) despite its having necessary ownership papers, sources said.

A general diary (GD) has already been filed by the PBL at Gazaria Police Station in Munshiganj district (GD number 419, dated 11th January, 2013) which says, “a group of people, led by the sub-contracting company Infratech Construction Company Limited (ICCL), has forcefully occupied the PBL land and vandalised construction materials worth millions of taka.”

According to papers provided by the RHD (Roads and Highways Department) to the PBL, the officials demarcated 16 acres of land in favour of the PBL in 2004 and after getting the government’s document the PBL also erected boundary walls surrounding their land.

PBL Managing Director Engineer Aminul Islam said without any prior notice a group of people suddenly broke their walls and vandalised their construction equipment with support of the RHD officials.

When contacted, ICCL Vice-Chairman Mustafizur Rahman Rizvi said, “We sought a place from the government to manufacture blocks for the bridge repairing purpose and they told us to use that land. We are not here permanently.”

He said, “As per direction from the high level the officials are helping us to occupy the land and after completion of the bridge repairing job we will leave the place.”

“We do not have any intention to occupy the PBL land for a long time as we are given only six months’ time to complete our job.”

Relating to such activities, Communications Minister Obaidul Quader said his government’s stance is always of zero tolerance. If someone wants to use the government’s name in such forceful occupation, they will be under the government’s watch.
