An Awami League leader was chopped to death and two others were injured as culprits attacked them at Maddha Aldi village under Tongibari upazila of the district on Monday morning.

The deceased Kamal Mallik, 35, was former AL president of Shimulia union ward-5 and a resident of Moddha Aldi village.

Deceased’s brother-in-law Shahid Hossain said, “There was a longstanding dispute between Kamal and his neighbors Azizul Sheikh and Nawshed Sheikh over land.”

“Centering the land dispute, Azizul and Nawshed along with six to seven people attacked Kamal and his associates with sharp weapons as they went to collect mustard from the disputed land at about 8:00am, injuring them critically,” he added.

Later, he succumbed to his injuries at Munshiganj District Hospital.

Tongibari Thana OC SA Khalek said, “On information, we sent the body to Munshiganj General Hospital morgue for autopsy.”

He said, “A murder case will be filed in this connection and we are conducting drives to catch the culprits.”
