Mawa Ferry Ghat relocation to cost Tk 1.56 billion

mawa-2-munshiganjThe Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) has estimated a cost of Tk 1.56 billion to complete the relocation of the Mawa Ferry Ghat to facilitate construction of the Padma Bridge, officials said.

The BIWTA last week submitted its project proposal to the Ministry of Shipping (MoF) stating cost of the relocation of the Mawa Ferry Ghat along with construction of allied facilities following a request made recently by the Bridge Division.

The Mawa Ferry Ghat, which plays a vital role in connecting the capital Dhaka with the country’s southern part, is situated within the acquisition area of Padma Bridge in Mawa Chowrasta and Charjanajat.

The proposed Mawa Ferry Ghat will be relocated between Kandirpara and Charjanajat.

The Bridge Division recently requested the BIWTA to relocate all ghats and other related structures in different suitable places by November 2014.

When asked about the necessity of relocation of the Mawa Ferry Ghat, the BIWTA officials said the relocation is required for constructing the Padma Bridge.

“The Ferry Ghat is also required to maintain launch and speed boat services,” said a BIWTA official.

In a meeting held on September 25 last in the MoS it was decided to relocate the Mawa Ferry Ghat.

A BIWTA committee, formed to implement the decision of MoS, recently visited the Mawa Ghat area along with the representatives of the Bridge Authority, Roads and Highways Department and Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB).

It was incorporated in their joint recommendations that the structures at the Ghat, parking yard and channel dredging would be executed by the BIWTA.

The major segments of the project cost for relocating the Mawa Ferry Ghat includes Tk 720 million for dredging, Tk 420 million for land acquisition, Tk 199 million for compensation for houses and tress and Tk 60.5 million for construction of parking yard.
