Gazaria OC withdrawn over poll violence

PoliceOfficer-in-Charge of the Gazaria Police Station in Munshiganj has been shunted out for negligence of duty during the violence-hit Upazila Parishad (sub-district) polls.

OC Mamunur Rashid has been moved to the Munshiganj police lines, said the district’s Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Zakir Hossain Majumder.

The decision was taken on Friday, a senior police officer told bdnews24.com. He chose to remain anonymous, as he was not authorised to brief the media.

Meanwhile, the superintendent of police has been sent on a seven-day leave.

ASP Majumder has been working as the acting SP while Inspector Md Farid Uddin has been made the Gazaria OC.

Local Union Parishad Chairman and Awami League leader Shamsuddin Pradhan, and Chhatra League activist Mahbubur Rahman Joton were killed and at least 40 others were injured during the Mar 23 local government poll.

Voting was suspended in nine centres in the Upazila and results withheld.

Lucky Begum, wife of BNP’s renegade candidate Abdul Mannan, who was shot during the violence, died in a Dhaka hospital on Thursday.

Additional police personnel have been deployed in the area as the news of Lucky’s death led to tension.

Police said they were watching the situation closely to prevent any untoward incident.
