Marzina Begum, wife of slain Awami League leader and Baluakandi UP chairman Shamsuddin Pradhan, was on Sunday unofficially elected chairman in the by-election to Baluakandi union in Gazaria upazila .

Marzina Begum, who contested the election with Lock symbol, defeated her nearest contestant by 2,145 votes.

Marzina polled 4,451 votes while her nearest rival Upazila Sramik League general secretary Shahjahan Master bagged 2,306 votes.

Returning officer and Gazaria UNO Afroza Khatun announced the unofficial polls results in the evening.

The union parishad chairman post fell vacant after the UP chairman Shamsuddin Pradhan was killed in a clash during polling in Gazaria upazila council election on March 23.
