Hartal in 14 districts on Monday

The BNP’s student wing, Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, has called a dawn-to-dusk hartal in 14 districts, including Dhaka, for Monday.

The shutdown programme was announced on Sunday to protest the siege on BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia’s Gulshan office and arrest of the party’s senior leaders, said a press release.

The districts that will come under the shutdown programme are Dhaka, Narsingdi, Narayanganj district and the city area, Munshiganj, Manikganj, Comilla north and south districts (organisational), Brahmanbaria, Kishoreganj, Netrokona, Mymensingh, Jamalpur and Sherpur.

The press release signed by Chhatra Dal’s office secretary Abdus Sattar Patowary said the respective units of the student organisation called the hartal.

Monday’s shutdown programme contrasts a rally planned by ruling Awami League in Dhaka city’s Suhrawardy Uddyan to mark the Bangabandhu Homecoming Day. However, the party is yet to take permission for the rally as the police has slapped a ban on it since 4 January.

Chhatra Dal president Rajib Ahsan and general secretary Akramul Hassan called upon all leaders and activists of the organisation to make the hartal a success.
