Pahela Baishakh

The new tradition of taking hilsa with pantabhat ((rice soaked in water) on Pahela Baishakh is compelling many people to collect the tasty fish by any means. That’s why many customers are rushing to the bank of the Padma River at Mawa ghat of Munshiganj district.

But this year the catch of big-size hilsa has been reduced drastically. As a result, the price of the dear fish has skyrocketed at the ghat in recent days. The photo shows a seller holding a big hilsa that was sold at Tk 17,000 on Sunday. photo: Mozammel Hossain Sajal
