Two held with 1kg gold at HSIA

Customs Intelligence (CI) officials in separate drives arrested two men and seized 1.04 kg of gold worth Tk 4.7 million (TK 47 lakh) at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA) on Saturday.

A team of CI arrested Sheikh Rony Ahmed, who arrived at the airport by a flight from Malaysia at 0030hrs on Saturday, said Mainul Khan, director general of the agency.

Spotting Rony’s ‘suspicious’ movement, officials challenged him and recovered two gold sticks weighing 462 grams contained in bottles of Pantene shampoo from his luggage, Mainul said.

The value of the gold seized from Rony was estimated at Tk 2.2 million (Tk 22 lakh). The officials arrested another man along with half kg of gold concealed in a charger light battery.

The offender was identified as Giasuddin, from Malpara, Munshiganj. He arrived at the airport from Malaysia by a Malaysian Airlines flight earlier in the morning.

Unlike the previous case, CI officials were tipped off about Giasuddin, and on apprehending him shortly after arrival, searched and recovered 575 grams of gold, in 15 small pieces, apart from 80 grams of ornaments worth Tk 2.5 million (TK 25 lakh) inside a charger light battery, said airport sources, according to a news agency.
