At least 15 people were injured, 10 of them bullet-wounded, in a tripartite clash ahead of the fifth phase of union parishad polls at Molakandi union in Munshiganj sadar on Wednesday morning.

The election in the union is scheduled to be held on May 28.

Locals said a tense situation was prevailing in the union over establishing supremacy for days among the supporters of Awami League-nominated chairman candidate Ripan Patwari and its rebel candidate Mohsina Haq Kalpana.

The clash first took place among the supporters of the rival groups at village Moheshpur around 8:30am. Both the groups opened fire on each other and blasted crude bombs.

Police rushed to the spot and both the parties locked in clash with them.

Sadar police sub-inspector Nurul Kader Saikat said they fired shots to bring the situation under control.

Eight bullet-wounded men were rushed to Munshiganj General Hospital from where two were referred to Dhaka for better treatment, Shaibal Bosak, a physician of the hospital.

Police, however, arrested six of the bullet-wounded at the hospital.

Other injured were taking treatment in private to avoid arrest, our correspondent reported.
