Police sources say 26-year-old Jharna Akhter was murdered at her residence in Jatrabari by her jealous flatmate, Jesmin Akhter alias Ranu, who took help from her brother-in-law, Mohammad Milon.

On the morning of April 27, Jharna Akhter was strangled to death with her own scarf. Her murderers then waited for darkness to fall.

Come evening, they carried her body to Shanir Akhra and left the body beside the Dhaka-Chittagong highway, covered with a bed sheet. They then grabbed her mobile phone and fled to Munshiganj.

On April 28, the body of the 26-year-old private clinic nurse was found by police at Shanir Akhra, Dhaka.
They sent her body to Sir Salimullah Medical College’s morgue for an autopsy and began their investigations.
Police sources said she had allegedly been murdered at her residence in Jatrabari by her flatmate, Jesmin Akhter alias Ranu, 40, who had apparently been jealous of her.

When questioned by the Dhaka Tribune, Jharna’s neighbours had much to say. According to them, Jesmin and Jharna shared a ground floor flat of a seven-storey building owned by Hannan Sheikh.

Jharna’s older brother, Md Nasir Uddin, confirmed that after his sister had unofficially separated from her husband about a year ago, she had sublet Jesmin’s flat.

Neighbours added that at the time, Jesmin had been having an illicit affair with a man called Delwar Hossain and had allowed him to live with them. In such close quarters, Delwar’s attention strayed to Jharna.

Jesmin was suspicious but was still in the dark about whether her boyfriend had been cheating on her with her flatmate, that is, until she learned that Jharna was planning to move out.

Controlled by jealousy and enraged by the fact that Jharna owed her Tk100,000, Jesmin decided to take matters into her own hand.

Jatrabari police station Officer-in-Charge Anisur Rahman confirmed these facts to the Dhaka Tribune.

He added that Jesmin had been arrested from Munshiganj after police uncovered evidence linking her to the murder. Jesmin’s brother-in-law Mohammad Milon, 38, had also been arrested.

During the primary investigation, both the arrested individuals had confessed to the murder.

In their confession, Jesmin and Milon said the murder was premeditated. Jesmin revealed the rift she had been having with Jharna and said she had recruited Milon to aid her in carrying out her plan.

OC Anisur said Jharna’s brother Nasir had lodged a case on April 29 and that both Jesmin and Milon had been produced before the court after their arrest.

When produced before Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Sabbir Yasir Ahsan Chowdhury, Milon made a confessional statement under Section 164 of the Criminal Procedure Code. Meanwhile, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Nur Nabi remanded Jesmin to three days of police custody.

Police sources say that Delwar is on the run.
