Driver detained after allegedly attempting to rape woman on bus

The bus helper remains on the run
A bus driver was arrested Monday night after he allegedly attempted to rape a passenger onboard.

The incident took place in Narayanganj’s Sonargaon upazila’s Meghna New Town neighbourhood around 10:30pm on Monday.

According to Moniruzzaman, officer-in-charge (OC) of Sonargaon police station, the woman was the only passenger on a Swadesh Service bus from Dhaka to Munshiganj when the driver decided to try and rape her. However, passengers waiting at the bus stop heard screams, rapidly boarded the bus, and caught the driver—Shamim Mia—red-handed.

The helper, who was at the steering wheel, made his escape while locals were dragging Shamim out.

Shamim Mia was handed over to Sonargaon police, who also impounded the bus.

OC Moniruzzaman said the woman was rescued and a case was being filed Tuesday afternoon by the woman.

Previously, on April 8, a bus driver, helper, and conductor allegedly attempted to rape a schoolgirl onboard a bus in Narayanganj’s Siddhirganj. The girl was rescued after locals stormed the bus when they heard her screams.

Additionally, on May 6, a nurse was gang-raped on a bus in Kishoreganj – and later killed when she was pushed off the bus.

According to a 2018 report by Bangladesh Jatri Kalyan Samity, at least 21 women were raped on public transportation between January 2017 and February 2018.
