UP polls: Allegations arise of ballot stuffing in Munshiganj

The supporters of two member candidates allegedly stuffed ballots at a polling centre in Munshiganj during today’s fifth phase of the Union Parishad elections.

The incident took place at Bhaterchar De A Mannan Pilot High School centre under Tengarchar Union of Gazaria upazila around 3:30pm, reports our Munshiganj correspondent.

The incident happened less than an hour after Munshiganj Deputy Commissioner Kazi Nahid Rasul, Superintendent of Police Abdul Momen, Additional District Magistrate Shilu Roy, Munshiganj Election Officer Mohammad Bashir Ahmed and other high officials visited the polling centre.

Manik Goldar, presiding officer of De A Mannan Pilot High School centre, confirmed the development to this correspondent.

The presiding officer said around 3:30pm, four to five women entered a booth of the centre claiming themselves as voters, snatched the ballot papers from the polling officials and stamped them on rooster symbol and lock symbol.

“Voting was suspended for 15 minutes at that time. The stamped ballot papers have been cancelled,” he said.

Besides, a few cocktail exploded outside the center of 50 No Charbalaki Natunchar Government Primary School in Hossendi Union 8:45 am.

Voting was suspended for 30 minutes at the time, said Md Bilal, presiding officer of the centre.

Besides, police seized six shotguns, 55 rounds of ammunition, a machete and two DB police uniforms from Hosendi Bridge area of Hossendi union, said Russell Monir, assistant superintendent of Munshiganj police.

Acting on a tip-off, six people were detained searching a microbus over the Hoshendi Bridge 10 am and seized those from them, said the police official.
