At around 8 PM on Monday night, locals recovered Lamia and Samia from a pond in the Bibandi area of the upazila. They were taken to the Sreenagar Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty doctor declared them dead.

The parents of the deceased children are blaming each other for the incident. Police have detained both the father and the mother for questioning.According to sources, day laborer Sohag Sheikh (28) of Bibandi village in Sreenagar Upazila married Shanta (24), daughter of Shah Alam from Mojidpur Doyhata village in Birtara Union, about two years ago. Five months ago, Shanta gave birth to twin daughters. Since the birth of the children, the couple often had domestic disputes. Although Shanta had been staying at her father’s house, she returned to her husband’s home a few days ago.Around 8 PM on Monday, neighbors heard a commotion from Sohag’s house.

When they rushed over, they learned that Lamia and Samia had been thrown into a nearby pond a short while earlier. Locals jumped into the water and rescued the children, then rushed them to Sreenagar Upazila Health Complex. Their father Sohag also arrived at the hospital, but the on-duty doctor pronounced both children dead.Locals reported that after the children were recovered, their mother Shanta claimed that the father, Sohag Sheikh, had thrown the babies into the pond following a domestic dispute. However, Sohag claimed that it was his wife Shanta who committed the act. Sohag’s speech-impaired brother Mamun indicated through gestures that he had witnessed the incident and pointed the finger at his sister-in-law Shanta.Police have detained both Sohag Sheikh and Shanta for interrogation. Dr. Cynthia Noor, the on-duty emergency physician at Srinagar Upazila Health Complex, said that the two children who had drowned were brought in dead around 9:15 PM.
