A father allegedly killed his drug-addicted son after being attacked with a knife at Srinagar upazila in Munshiganj district.
The incident occurred at around 7:30 AM at Dewanpara area under Sholaghar union in the upazila on Monday.
The accused is Abul Hossain, 70, a resident of the same area.
According to police and locals, Abul Hossain lived with his son Ahad, who had a history of drug addiction. Ahad would frequently physically assault his father and sell household items for drug money.
Later, Abul had filed a written complaint with the Srinagar Police Station about his son’s behaviour just two weeks ago.
On the morning of the incident, Ahad demanded Tk 15,000 from his father. When Abul Hossain refused, Ahad attacked him with a knife.
In a desperate attempt to save himself, Abul Hossain managed to grab the knife and stab his son in the chest and stomach. Ahad died on the spot.
After the incident, Abul Hossain remained by his son’s body until neighbours were alerted to the situation and called the police.
Sumon Khan, a member of the Sholaghar union Parishad and a neighbour, described Abul Hossain as a “peace-loving” person who was humiliated by his son’s actions. He noted that the community had tried to help Ahad, but he refused to change.
Abul Hossain’s daughter, Jahanara Begum, said that the entire family was tormented by her brother’s behaviour. She said that Ahad had been admitted to a drug rehabilitation centre for four months but returned to his old ways after being discharged.
Srinagar Police Station officer-in-charge (OC) Nazmul Huda Khan confirmed the arrest and said that Ahad’s body has been sent for a post-mortem examination.
Legal actions are underway in connection with the case, said the OC.
