Youth shot dead in Munshiganj amid clash between rival BNP factions

A young man was shot dead allegedly in a clash between two rival factions of the BNP in the char area under Sadar Upazila of the district on Sunday night.

The deceased was identified as Tuhin Dewan, 22, son of Selim Dewan, President of the Krishak League’s Mollahkandi Union unit. Their family hails from Dakshin Beherkandi Village in Mollahkandi Union. Tuhin’s late uncle, Swapan Member, was a local Awami League leader.

The incident took place around 9:30 pm in front of Munshikandi Clinic under Mollahkandi Union, reportedly following a dispute between two BNP factions – one led by Awlad Mollah and Wazir Ali, and another by District BNP Convening Committee Member Ataur Rahman Atik Mallik and Union BNP President Wahid Mollah. Police and locals said Tuhin was known to be a supporter of the Wahid-Atik group.

Local sources said that since the government’s fall on August 5 last year, Tuhin and his associates had gone into hiding due to political tension. They recently returned to the area, which reignited the conflict with the Awlad-Wazir group.

According to Akash Dewan, Tuhin’s cousin, “Police recently arrested Babu Kazi, a close associate of Wazir Ali and a key accused in several cases. Since then, Wazir’s men had been issuing threats. On Sunday night, when the power went out, they opened indiscriminate fire under the leadership of Liton from the Wazir group, hitting Tuhin.”

Tuhin was taken to Munshiganj General Hospital, where doctors declared him dead around 10:30pm, said Dr Pranto Sardar of the hospital’s emergency department.

Md Firoz Kabir, Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime and Operations), said, “We are investigating the incident and will take legal action against those involved. Additional police have been deployed in the area, and the situation is under control.”
