At least ten individuals were injured, including gunshot wounds, during a clash between two factions of the BNP in Gozaria upazila of Munshiganj district on Friday evening.
The incident occurred near Jamaldi Bus Stand. Both sides, including women, were involved in the clash. The office and vehicle of Ali Hossain, joint convener of the Upazila Jubo Dal, were also vandalised.
The injured individuals are Swadhin, 28, Shirina Begum, 46, Saidul, 25, Delwar, 49, Mostafa, 48, Asif Mir, 19 and Noyon, 26. Among them, Swadhin and Saidul were in critical condition and sent to Dhaka for treatment.
The clash reportedly stems from the BNP’s candidate announcement on 4 December for 36 constituencies nationwide. In Munshiganj-3, central BNP Social Welfare Secretary Md Kamruzzaman Ratan received the nomination, while District BNP Member Secretary Mohiuddin Ahmed was left out, which escalated tensions between the two groups.
Ali Hossain alleged that while they were preparing a torchlight procession to protest the candidate selection in Munshiganj-3, supporters of Kamruzzaman Ratan attacked them, vandalizing his office and vehicle and leaving 8–10 people injured, some by gunfire.
Momin Mridha stated that as residents of Gozaria were preparing a celebratory procession for Ratan’s nomination, Ali Hossain’s office allegedly fired shots and threw bricks and firecrackers, which led them to retaliate.
Gajaria Police Station officer-in-charge (OC) Anwar Alam Azad confirmed the incident and assured that the situation is now under control.
