Police await DNA confirmation as relative claims identification
Police have said a body recovered from Mawa close to Padma River is being treated as potentially that of Md Forqan Molla, the main accused in the murder of five members of a family in Kapasia, Gazipur, though identification remains unconfirmed and a DNA test is awaited.

At around 4:30pm today, Md Elias, in-charge of the Mawa River Police Outpost, told The Daily Star that the body was first identified by a family member of Forqan Molla, but was in a decomposed state.

“His brother Jabbar initially identified the body as his brother’s. However, the face of the recovered body has decomposed,” he said.

He added that while the family member made the identification, official confirmation depends on forensic testing. “You may write it referring to his brother Jabbar, who said it was his brother’s body,” he said.

He further said only DNA analysis can conclusively confirm the identity of the deceased.

Kapasia Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Shahinur Alam said a murder case has been filed by Shahadat Molla, father of victim Sharmin, naming Forqan Molla as the prime accused, along with three to four unidentified individuals.

The victims were identified as Sharmin, 35; her children Mim, 16, Maria, 8, and Faria, 2; and her brother Rasul, 22.

The killings took place on the night of May 8 at a house in Rautkona village of Kapasia.

Investigators suspect the killings stemmed from a family dispute.

Gazipur Superintendent of Police Md Sharif Uddin earlier said police believe the accused may have jumped into the Padma River from the Padma Bridge on May 11 following the incident.
