Establishment ministry renamed

The government has rechristened the Ministry of Establishment as the Ministry of Public Administration. The new name was approved by the cabinet at a meeting in the Secretariat on Monday, with prime minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair, her press secretary Abul Kalam Azad told bdnews24.com.

Azad said the government moved to rename the ministry following confusion about the name in the country and abroad.

Earlier, the prime minister had cleared in principle the decision to rename the ministry, he said.

The ministry would start working with its new name soon after completion of some formalities to remove the longstanding confusion, he added.

The step to change the name of the ministry was first taken during the last caretaker government. Several discussions, views exchange meetings and seminars were organised in this regard. The programmes threw up three names, out of which one got final approval in Monday’s meeting.

According to Azad, the meeting also gave a go-ahead to the proposals to form ‘Coal Power Generation Company’ and revise the military assistance treaty between Bangladesh and Turkey.

The cabinet also approved in principle the draft Dhaka Transport Coordination Authority Act, 2011, he said.

Dhaka, Narayanganj, Munshiganj, Gazipur, Narsingdi and Mymensingh districts would be covered under the act, he added.

Quarterly report on the progress of implementation of decisions taken by the cabinet and the reports on the finance minister’s visit to France and expatriates’ welfare minister’s to Tunisia were also tabled at the meeting.

The prime minister’s press secretary said 107 decisions were taken by the cabinet in the past three months (January-March).

The cabinet of the incumbent government took 690 decisions, of which 618 were implemented, he said.
