2 killed as rival groups clash in Gazaria

A union parishad member and his brother were killed in a gunfight over what appears to be establishing supremacy at Charbalaki area in Gazaria upazila yesterday.

Hosendi Union Parishad member Golap Sarkar, 45, and his brother Ayub Sarkar, 28, died of gunshot wounds, and 10 others were injured in the clash.

Doctors at Narayanganj Sonargaon Health Complex declared the two dead when they were taken to the hospital.

Five of the injured were sent to Munshiganj General Hospital while the rest were taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, said Gazaria Police.

Police arrested three injured Sabuj, 19, Faruk, 20, and Alamgir, 25.

Munshiganj Deputy Commissioner Saiful Hasan Badal said two rival groups of former UP chairman Abdul Matin Montu and Nazmul engaged in an altercation and at one stage a gunfight ensued.

Hedayetul islam, officer-in-charge of Gazaria Police Station, said both the rival groups belonged to the ruling Awami League.

The situation was under control and police were deployed in the area, he added.

Locals said many residents fled the area fearing further clash.
