850 passengers narrowly escaped drowning

Tanjil Hasan: A Chandpur bound passenger launch narrowly escaped being sunk, with at least 850 passengers on board, in the mighty Meghna river near Charkishorganj of Munshiganj sadar upazila in Munshiganj district on Monday night.

MV Green Water-10, which can carry 400 passengers, had set out from Sadarghat of Dhaka. When it reached the mighty river, water started to get into deck of the launch. Finding that the launch could sink, the master of the launch hurriedly could able to anchor it nearby.

Munshiganj sadar police station Officer in Charge (OC) Md. Anisur Rahman said, “As the launch had too much passengers on board, it was about to sink but luckily the master was able to anchor it. No passenger was hurt. Another lauch was arranged to get the passengers reach their destination.

Kolagachhiya Naval Police outpost in Charge Mostafizur Rahman said, “Though the staffs of the launch claimed that it was clashed by a bulkhead but, we think it primarily that it’s not true. The launch was about to sink for over loaded passengers.
