Ferry disruption: Sufferings mount at Mawa ghat

Thousands of passengers remained stranded at Mawa Ghat in Munshiganj as the Mawa-Kawrakandi ferry route faced a huge pressure of vehicles following the disruption of ferry service.

More than 600 vehicles, carrying the holidaymakers, queued up on both sides of the river since Friday morning, causing immense sufferings to the passengers specially, women and children. A long tailback of 2km has been seen from Mawa to Dogachi of Shreenagar.

In-charge of Mawa Ghat SM Ashiquzzam said: “The tailback was created as the ferries are taking more times to return to the ghat due to strong currents in the Padma. Ferries are taking almost two hours to reach Mawa ghat from Kawrakandi, although it is normally a one and a half hours trip.”

“Currently 18 ferries are operating on the route. All the ferries are active and carrying vehicles,” BIWTC manager at Mawa Sirajul Haq said.

Superintendent of Munshiganj police Biplab Bijoy Talukder told the Dhaka Tribune: “Specific measures have been taken to ease the sufferings of the people. Trucks loaded with materials are kept aside while cars and buses are being allowed to cross the road in a disciplined way.”

“Besides, 400 police members are working to stop extortion and ensure security of the passengers. RAB, Ansar, Coast Guard and Rover Scout members are also working with them while Neval Police are working at 42 points.”
