Clash over sand lifting from Meghna : 10 hurt

At least ten people were injured, three of them by bullets, as sand lifters attacked the villagers in Bakchar area in Sadar upazila of the district yesterday morning.

Bullet-hit Sajeda, Shohel and Misir Ali were rushed to Munshiganj General Hospital while others to local clinics.

Misir Ali was shifted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH). At noon as his condition deteriorated.

Locals said the clash ensued when the villagers protested sand lifting by some lessees from the River Meghna by dredgers.

At one stage, dredger owners’ men swooped on the villagers, leading to a clash between the two sides. Villagers alleged that dredger owners’ men also opened fire during the clash that left three villagers injured by bullets.

Afsar Uddin Bhuyan, one of the lessees, refuted the allegation of opening fire on the villagers.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Munshiganj Sadar Police Station Abul Khayer Fakir said additional police have been deployed there to avert any further incident. Drive is on to arrest the persons involved, he added.
