Poppy plants found in Munshiganj

Police are looking for a member of a union parishad in Munshiganj district for owning a poppy plantation on 3 acres of land at Banglabazar in the sadar upazila.

‘The time has not come to disclose the name of the UP member but we are certain about his owning of the poppy plantation,’ said Munsihganj additional superintendent of police Khandker Ashfaquzzaman. The UP member is not from the union where the plantation is, he said.

Earlier on Sunday a mobile team gathered evidence from the poppy field but failed to arrest anyone. The mobile court, led by assistant commissioner Sheikh Mesbah Ul Saberin, said that even the farmers who worked on the plantation had been on the run.

He said that the court collected some poppy plants as sample. The poppy plantation had been destroyed before the mobile court reached there, said Mesbah.

He said that the samples would be sent to the department of agricultural extension for tests.
