7,000kg hoarded ilish seized in Munshiganj

The 22-day long ban on catching, selling, hoarding and transporting ilish is set to come to an end on November 4, which has been ongoing to protect ilish with eggs

A mobile court on Monday seized 7,000 kgs of illegally stored ilish from a house in Munshiganj’s Louhajang upazila during the ongoing ilish-catching ban.

The ilish were stocked in 61 cartons and were preserved with ice in the house in Dahri village of Kalma union in the upazila, found law enforcers in a drive that started at 5pm.

Md Rasheduzzaman, executive magistrate of the mobile court, said acting on a tip-off, members from the upazila administration, police and fisheries office conducted a four-hour long drive in the house and seized the fish.

Police could not arrest anyone during their drive and got to know that a group of unidentified fishermen took the house for rent.

On October 25, at least 12 members of river police were injured during their drive against illegal ilish catching in Meghna as local fishermen hurled brickbats at them.

The incident took place in the Meghna River under Rajrajeshwar region of Chandpur’s Matlab upazila, where police fired blank shots to bring the situation under control.

During the ban on ilish catching law enforcers at times used helicopters at night to cast light on fishermen illegally catching ilish with eggs and conducted drives.
