Germany to become Bangladesh’s No.1 export market

Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed has said that Germany will become Bangladesh’s No.1 export market in the days ahead.
“Right now, Germany is the second largest export market of Bangladesh. In future, Germany will turn into No. 1 export market for us,” he told reporters after a meeting with a German trade delegation at his Secretariat office on Thursday.

State Secretary at the German Federal Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs Jorg Asmussen led the delegation.

The Commerce Minister said: “Germany is pleased over Bangladesh’s economic development and the country expressed willingness to extend bilateral ties on all fronts.”

Bangladesh is working to diversify its exportable goods apart from creating new export markets, he added. “Different industrialised countries have already expressed keen interest to import medicines, ships, ICT and leather goods from Bangladesh,” he said.

Tofail also said the government has been working relentlessly to raise its export earnings to US$50 billion and turn the country into mid-income nation by 2021 on the 50th anniversary of Bangladesh’s independence.

The minister also shared with the delegation the progress made in the country’s readymade garment industry after the Rana Plaza disaster.

The Commerce Minister said the government has decided to create eight exclusive economic zones in the country to attract foreign direct investment. A ready-made garment village would be created on 500-acre of land at Baushia in Munshiganj district where the owners will be able to avail all the opportunities. Besides, the government is providing loans to the garment owners at a low interest rate for developing dormitories for garment workers.

“In fact, the government is trying its best to put the country’s garment sector on a solid foundation,” he said.
