Human chain demands justice for Payel

DEATH OF NSU STUDENT
People from all walks of life formed a human chain yesterday in the port city, demanding capital punishment for the culprits behind the killing of North South University student Saidur Rahman Payel.

Payel was found dead in Munshiganj on Tuesday, after he was thrown into a canal by employees of a Hanif Paribahan bus after being injured trying to board the bus after getting off on the highway.

The human chain was formed on Chittagong Press Club premises in the morning, where relatives and well-wishers of Payel, along with students of different institutes took part with placards.

Terming Payel’s death as agonising, speakers said it was a grievous crime to throw away an injured person to a canal.

Kamruzzaman Chowdhury Titu, uncle of the deceased, said, “The employees were supposed to take Payel to hospital after the accident happened. Instead of doing that, they killed him and threw his body away. If this is the condition of humanity, then where would people go?”

He demanded justice for Payel so that no one can commit such heinous crime in the future.

AKM Belayet Hossain, president of Swandip Association, said the driver and the conductors of Hanif Paribahan should be tried under the speedy trial tribunal. Action for such crime should never be delayed, he opined.

Sarwar Hasan Jamil, director of Chittagong Chamber of Commerce and Industry, journalist Sarowar Suman, and human rights activist Aminul Haque Babu were present at the human chain, among others.

The decomposed body of Payel was recovered on July 23, three days after he went missing, from a canal at Gozaria upazila in Munshiganj. He was going to Dhaka by a bus of Hanif Paribahan and got down from the bus for relieving himself while the bus had got stuck in traffic. He became injured while getting back on the bus as the bus’s automatic door opened on him. Instead of taking him to hospital in that condition, the driver and the conductor of the bus threw his body to a canal.
