4 held for killing fish trader’s staff

Four robbers were arrested in Sreenagar upazila of Munshiganj on Friday in connection with the killing of an employee of a fish trading agency in the capital on Thursday.

Police arrested the four – Badal, 30, of Barisal, Badsha, 30, of Jhalakati, Kamal Hossain, 40, of Munshiganj, and Manik Miah, 22, of Kushtia – along with a motorcycle and Tk 50,000 from Hasara Fish Depot, reports our Munshiganj correspondent.

The arrestees confessed to police their involvement in the killing of Md Hafiz, 40, at the capital’s Mohakhali on Thursday, said Sheikh Waziar Rahman, in-charge of Hasara highway police outpost.

Quoting the arrestees, the police official said the robbers hijacked the fish-laden pickup van and pushed Hafiz, an employee of Dui Bandhu Fish Enterprise, off the running vehicle.

Later, they brought the pick-up van to the Hasara depot and sold the fish, he said.

They were arrested when the robbers went to the depot to collect the payment, he added.

The arrestees have been sent to Dhaka since the murder case was filed with Kafrul Police Station.

The carjacking took place when the pickup van was on its way to Abdullahpur from the capital’s Karwan Bazar with 32 cartons of fish worth Tk 3 lakh.

The van driver, Md Yusuf, who was also threw off the pick-up van, was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
