Mawa-Kawrakandi ferry services resume after 11hrs

mawa-ghat_1Ferry services on the Mawa-Kawrakandi route in Padma resumed this morning after around 11 hours of suspension due to severe river erosion.

A total of 11 ferries including K-type and dump ferry will run on the route but Ro Ro ferry service could not be restored yet, said Sirajul Haque, manager of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC) at Mawa.

“But now no truck will be allowed to cross the river. Due to heavy current in the river, four tug boats have been arranged to pull the dump ferries. The ferries would take more three to four hours to cross the river,” he added.

Ferry movement between Mawa and Kawrakandi, one of the important ferry routes of the country, were suspended around 9:00pm yesterday because of erosion at the terminal.

Shipping Minister Shajahan Khan visited the Mawa ghat this morning and instructed the authorities concerned to resume the ferry services as soon as possible.

Ferry Daplu left Kawrakandi terminal for Mawa at 8:22am but no ferry starts from or reaches at Mawa terminal till filing of this report around 11:15am.
