BIWTA land grabbed overnight

‘I protested their illegal activity and so they have threatened to set fire to my house’ Some 35 influential locals grabbed a government land by setting up bamboo-made structures along Baligaon-Taltola canal in Tongibari upazila.

The incident took place next to Baligaon Bazar at a period between Friday night and Saturday morning.

The men grabbed some other lands inside the market a few months ago.

Timber traders said they had been failing to load and unload goods since Saturday, when some people grabbed this land and set up structures blocking their way to the canal.

Those owning shops in the market said the lands they took lease from the BIWTA were grabbed on the same day.

Baligaon Bazar Committee Secretary Manjurul Islam said: “I protested their illegal activity and so they have threatened to set fire to my house.”

Tongibari Upazila Assistant Commissioner Rahela Rahmatullah could not be reached for comment.
