Works are going speedily to implement the mega project of Padma Multipurpose Bridge as 49 percent of the construction of the main bridge was completed till the end of September.
“We are making all-out efforts to complete the construction work of the much-awaited bridge within the stipulated time. We have already completed 49 percent of the construction of the main bridge,” Project Director of the Padma Multipurpose Bridge Project (PMBP) M Shafiqul Islam told BSS here today.
Though the progress of the construction work was below the target, he hoped the country’s largest bridge on the mighty river Padma would be completed by 2018.
According to an official of PMBP, 34 percent work of the river training, 99.55 percent of the Janjira connecting road, 100 percent of Mawa connecting road and 100 percent of the Padma Bridge service-area-2 has been completed.
“The construction work of the bridge is going on in full swing under the dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina,” he added.
Once completed, the 6.15-kilometre road-rail bridge across the Padma will be the largest bridge in Bangladesh which will connect Louhajong in Munshiganj to Shariatpur, linking the south-west of the country, to the northern and the eastern regions.
Bangladesh Bridge Authority (BBA) is constructing the project with a cost of Taka 28,79,338.76 lakh. The construction work of the bridge began in 2014.
Work on the Padma Bridge is broadly divided into five parts-the main bridge, river training, two link roads and infrastructure (service area) construction.
Chaina Major Bridge Engineering Company Limited is working for constructing the main bridge while Sinohydro Corporation Limited of China was appointed for the river training works and Bangladesh’s Abdul Monem Limited was given the contract for the two link roads and infrastructure construction.
The bridge would also facilitate regional trade, promote industrial and commercial activities and increase economic and employment opportunities.
According to the bridge project, a total of 41 spans will be set up on the bridge and 3.5 kilometer viaduct would be constructed in the bridge between Mawa of Munshiganj and Jajira of Shariatpur.
