20 injured in AL factional clashes in Munshiganj

At least 20 people, including five bearing bullet wounds, were injured in clashes between two rival groups of the ruling Awami League at Gazaria in Munshiganj on Saturday over establishing supremacy in the area.

Local people said that clashes erupted between supporters of Gazaria upazila parishad chairman Aminul Islam and its former chairman Refayet Ullah Khan over establishing supremacy in the area for sand trading from the River Meghna in Imanpur.

Aminul is also general secretary of the upazila Awami League and Refayet is a president candidate of the upazila AL unit to be elected in the upcoming council.

Bullet injured Ahsan Bepari, Shahid Bepari, Jahid Hasan, Shah Paran and Abu Taher were admitted to different hospitals in Munshiganj and Dhaka.

Gazaria police officer-in-charge Harun-ur-Rashid said at least five people were arrested in this connection and nine cocktails seized from the spot.

Witnesses said that at least 50 houses were demolished and several cocktails blasted during the clashes that erupted around 11:00am.

They said that clashes ensued when Aminul’s supporter and Imampur union parishad member Shah Alam and others attacked and damaged the houses of Rasel, supporter and nephew of Refayet Ullah.
